The Curriculum

key stage 5

The Sixth Form at Tavistock College offers a broad range of academic A levels and vocational courses. We pride ourselves on offering the highest quality of teaching and learning. Our aim is to provide clear advice and guidance, opportunities and learning experiences to enable all to progress to their chosen futures. We also provide an all-round education comprising of a wealth of opportunities for students to volunteer in the College and wider community, to lead younger students, to take part in sport and music and performances, where interests dictate, and to develop character. We aim to nurture, challenge and develop all students to enable their success.

As well as providing breadth, the College prides itself on excellence at Key Stage 5. The College runs an ‘Aspire’ program for the most academically able, giving them an introduction to the wider world of competitive careers and universities. We consistently see a handful of students win places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities and onto prestigious courses, such as to study medicine, each year. A raft of students gain places at Russell Group universities and many others graduate to higher learning, apprenticeships or into successful careers. We support all students in their next steps, wherever they are headed.

Our curriculum consists of the choice of twenty-seven different A levels, including all of the traditional subjects plus some less common subjects. We also offer seven level 3 BTECs (A Level equivalent, vocational qualifications). We run a level 2 (GCSE equivalent level) course, for students who need an extra year before they move on to do level 3 courses. All students who do not already possess a grade 4 or higher in English and/or Mathematics GCSEs are supported to take these courses again until they attain the 4 grade or higher.
